Mr. Speaker, the incident that my friend opposite speaks about is abhorrent, and we condemn it in all possible terms, but let me just be clear: The Parole Board of Canada makes decisions independently. We as a government have made significant changes to the criminal justice system, and we will continue to listen to victims and ensure that the right changes are in place. We will continue to work with survivors, victims and the organizations that work with them in order to strengthen our parole system.

Mr. Speaker, issues around public safety should not be politicized. What is important is that every member of the House, every single one of us elected to office, has a responsibility to ensure that we support victims. That is exactly what our government has been doing. We are working with representatives of survivor groups, with survivors and with their family members to ensure that we have the right changes to the criminal justice system, including parole. That is the commitment we make today, and that is the commitment that every single one of us on this side of the aisle makes to Canadians.

Mr. Speaker, as members are aware, earlier this year we passed an amount of transformational legislation that speaks to criminal justice reform. First and foremost, we have Bill C-14, which strengthens bail as well as sentencing, and Bill C-16, which ensures the rights of victims are protected. We will continue to support public safety and invest in our frontline officers, including hiring 1,000 new RCMP personnel, as well as 1,000 CBSA officers.
Mr. Speaker, let me share some of the early results from the justice reforms that we brought forward. Extortion is down 10% across Canada. Firearms offence is down 14%. Homicide is down 16%, which is the lowest in a generation, and child sexual abuse and exploitation is down 21%. We will continue to… Read full speechShow less
Mr. Speaker, let me share some of the early results from the justice reforms that we brought forward. Extortion is down 10% across Canada. Firearms offence is down 14%. Homicide is down 16%, which is the lowest in a generation, and child sexual abuse and exploitation is down 21%. We will continue to ensure the safety and security of Canadians and continue to invest in law enforcement, to ensure that all Canadians are safe, and not just safe, but also feel safe.
Mr. Speaker, unlike the party opposite, we have every confidence in the RCMP to do their job. It is their responsibility to ensure that laws are adhered to, and I have every confidence that those in Manitoba will execute and discharge their duties as required.
