Mr. Speaker, selling out our fishing industry to foreign interests is not nonsense. I would have the member for St. John's East understand that. The Prime Minister and the President of France two weeks ago announced a 1,500-tonne quota of crab to be caught in waters that are controlled by Canada. The Minister of Fisheries expressed her disappointment. The Canadian fishing industry deserves better. Will the Prime Minister stand today with our fishing industry and stop this giveaway, or has he already sold it out to foreign interests?
Calm down.
Mr. Speaker, crab fishermen and plant workers back home were not amused with that response from the member for St. John's East. The Minister of Fisheries should at least know that next year's crab quotas will be set next year, which is in opposition to what she said, that the quotas have not been an… Read full speechShow less

The Minister of Fisheries should at least know that next year's crab quotas will be set next year, which is in opposition to what she said, that the quotas have not been announced. Maybe she is catering her response to the French fishermen she met last summer. Will the Liberal Prime Minister stand with our fishing industry, or has he already sold it out like he did with our steel producers?
Mr. Speaker, the Liberal Prime Minister may have the authority, but he certainly does not have the right to trade away the future of fishermen and plant workers just to gain momentary access to Europeans. Mr. Speaker, the Liberal Prime Minister may have the authority, but he certainly does not have the right to trade away the future of fishermen and plant workers just to gain momentary access to Europeans. Giving France 1,500 tonnes of snow crab to catch on the Canadian shelf is history repeating itself. Pierre Elliott Trudeau traded away our fish to Europeans in the sixties, seventies and eighties. The question is, will the Liberal Prime Minister stop the European carnage of Canadian fisheries and cancel his modern-day giveaway of Canadian coastal livelihoods?
Mr. Speaker, obviously, the minister is not familiar with this issue. The Liberal government has turned its back on Canada's fishing industry. The Prime Minister is abandoning our sovereignty in favour of Europeans, who have a long history of destroying Canadian fish stocks. Yesterday, the Minister … Read full speechShow less
Mr. Speaker, obviously, the minister is not familiar with this issue. The Liberal government has turned its back on Canada's fishing industry. The Prime Minister is abandoning our sovereignty in favour of Europeans, who have a long history of destroying Canadian fish stocks. Yesterday, the Minister of Fisheries bragged about how she hung out with fishermen in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Conservatives stand with Canadian coastal communities instead of those on the French islands. Will the Liberal Prime Minister change course and cancel this deal with France to protect Canadian livelihoods?
